Today finds us in receipt of a few of the many Historical events of our ancestors in their early Pioneer life, when they started out to battle with the hardships of the early Frontiers.

Joseph Bishop about 24 years of age, and Elizabeth Young, 19 years of age, both of Ashland County, joined heart and hand and like the birds that flit out from their Mother's nest, they too had a desire in their hearts to build a home of their own.  As they sailed out on their stormy voyage, their only wedding present was an 80-acre tract of timberland from Grandfather Young, it being situated about six miles from Ashland, Ohio.

There they began their laborious task of felling the timber, from which they selected logs to build their Cabin, choosing those of uniform size as much as was possible to do.  Cutting them the required length they then proceeded to chop notches a certain distance from the eng of each one, placing them one on of another fitting the notches together at the corners, till they reached the required height of the Cabin, fi1ling the cracks with chunks and plastering them over with mud. Then with the aid of a broad Axe and Iron wedge they made what they called puncheons, for flooring the cabin.

This was done by selecting the straightest timber obtainable and cutting the logs equal lengths, and splitting them about three or four times according to the size of the logs, then standing them on edge, hewed off the splinters and straightened the edges, fitting them together until the Cabin was floored.  Then the door was made of the same class of lumber, consisting of two puncheons fitted together with short pieces of timber, nailed across the slabs with wooden pins, it was then ready to hang which was done by cutting out two pieces of timber the required size, pinning one end on the door, while the other end had a hole in to admit a large wooden pin, with a knob on one end, a corresponding piece being placed on the Cabin, it was then ready for the latch, which was a piece of wood about a foot long, having a hole in the end, with a good sized leather thong having a knot on each end, was put through the latch and protruded through a hole in the door with one end inside and one end outside, by pulling the string the latch was raised from the Hitch, which was made of a block of wood.  With a notch on one side placed on the Cabin, permitting anyone on the outside to enter by pulling the string.  Thus the old saying originated, “The Latch string is always out" meaning a hearty welcome within, where the old log fire was throwing out its rays of heat and light warming and cheering the hearts of all within.  With its vast clouds of smoke curling up through a chimney built of sticks and mud.

Next then on tile program was the roof that sheltered their venerable heads from all the storms and chilly blasts, was made of clapboards, by cutting oak timber in four foot lengths, and splitting and rifting and placed about the same as shingles, using saplings for rafters and a pretty lair sized log placed lengthwise to hold the clapboards down.  This completed the Cabin.  But all this time the inner man had to be supplied from the rations in store; with the help of wild game that Father was able to bring in, for he was an expert with the old rifle.  When he started out it always meant that something was coming his way.

So they got along until the Cabin was up, roofed and floored, and the door could be set in place and supported with props.

Here they found it necessary to make a trip to mill, the nearest one to be reached was 20 miles, and a horse power mill at that, so he loaded up a horse with some corn and started to make the trip, which consumed 2 days.

Mother staying alone that night in that dense forest (show me the one today that would have taken her place) when the shades of night drew nigh, she rolled the logs in and built a rousing old fire for the night. But darkness had no sooner covered that cabin till the wolves came in a swarm and howled till the very earth trembled, Mother no doubt felt a little shaky but knowing that wolves were afraid of fire, she consoled herself with the thought and retired for the night, sleeping soundly until morning, the wolves retreating at their leisure.

Thus they toiled and labored until their forest home in the woods was converted into one of the most beautiful farms in Ashland Co. Fruit that was not surpassed by any, and everything else that the farm could produce to promote health and happiness, yet with all their surroundings one thing was still 1acking; The Farm was not large enough to furnish employment for the sturdy family that had come to bless their home, so there was but one thing to do, that was to dispose of that home so dear to the hearts of all and seek a new location which they found in the old Homestead in Crawford County, purchasing 160 Acres of timber land with about 10 Acres cleared, and a Cabin house built. Here they started out one and all full of ambition to clear off their forest home, which had so recently been the home of the "Red Man "The Wyandotte Tribe" and give it the Title of "Home Sweet Home”

Moving to their new locations in February of 1839 they drove through in wagons, sping overnight at Spring Mills not far from Mansfield, arriving at their destination the next day.

Here they all joined in full force to erect a more comfortable home which was built of hewed logs, with all the modern conveniences of the day, consisting of bedroom, sitting room and Kitchen all combined in one with a commodious old fire place in one end and (A Tin plate stove) as they was called, in the center.  This was constructed with an oven above the firebox, running the full length of the stove and closed with sheet iron doors.  The was ground smooth and used to bake griddle cakes on, the fireplace being supplied with a Crane and movable trammels with hooks on the ends, to hang kettles for a boil, and a long handled iron shovel served the purpose of lifting coals from the fire and placing them on the hearth.  To accommodate the large iron skillets, so often filled with the luscious fried chicken, when the iron lid that was covered with goals was lifted with a hookThe Aroma that filled the air would certainly have tickled the palate of an Epicure.  That fragrance can never be erased from my memory, and the baking that was done in the old brick oven, that delicious bread that was raised in little round baskets, which Father made of Rye straw and ash splits, was turned out on a long handled wooden shovel, made convenient to reach the back of the oven, and slipped off on the hearth, which had previously been heated to insure a nice even brown.

Then when Cake and Pie was to be baked for Sunday dinner and Company there was a dozen or more pies prepared at one time (for nothing short of that would fill the bill when we were all at home) they were placed in the oven and baked so nice and even.  Of all the ranges and gas Ovens that have been invented, nothing can equal the old "Out Oven”.

Then at Christmas time, for Mother always made it a rule to invite all the married children home to eat dinner with her.  Then the old oven was again put on double duty, it was filled to its utmost capacity with all kinds of Pies and Cakes, such as none but Mother could make.

Luscious old mince pies, and pumpkin pies adulterated with cream and eggs, they would fairly melt in your mouth, and the ginger cakes with all their accompaniments.  Now the baking completed, then came the roasting process, which consisted of Turkey, Chicken and Beef with a few yards of good fresh country sausage thrown in.

Thus the old table was loaded till it fairly groaned to be relieved of its burden, which was promptly done by those that had already arrived, and waiting to perform the task, which certainly was enjoyable to one and all.

What a Halo of Joy overspread that family circle as they united their voices together, strengthening the ties of Love and Friendship that bound their hearts together as one.

What a mingling of Joys and sorrows when recalling those Happy childhood days.  Can we ever forget that Mother's Love and Care?  How close we nestled to her bosom when our little childish hearts were aching for sympathy.  MOTHER the only one that could heal our wounds.

Is there a heart here today that does not respond to the language of the Poet in His Beautiful Poem:

Backward, turn backward O time in your flight,
Make me a Child again, Just for to-night;
Mother, O Mother come back from that Echoless shore,
Take me in your arms again, as in days of Yore,
Backward, turn backward, 0 time in your flight,
Make me a Child again, Just for to-night.
