Why and when did Thomas G. Martin come west from Maryland and with who?

If Thomas came to California because of the California Gold Rush, trying to establish when and why...and since Thomas was a miner per the 1870 census, the "The California Gold Rush" takes place on January 24, 1848, lasted until 1855, when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in Coloma CA.  Which is 340 miles from Scott River CA, which Scott River is the first known place Thomas per the 1870 census lived.  Unknown about the 1850 & 1860 census.

Section 3 -From Linda & a book from Siskiyou Historical Society about the Martin's

Siskiyou Historical Society book Siskiyou Pioneer, #9 volume, issued in 1996, about the Martin's, approx. 130 pages.  Footnote: Thomas died on his front porch in a rocking chair.

Note: The following may not be accurate as of this writing 20 Feb 08

1. Florance MATHUS/DIGGLE is a relative of Thomas Martin, she is an Indian medicine woman, Indian name of "Dr. 2 Feathers , m. Albert "Slim" Diggle. The SHS just says she is related to Martin's. I found she is George Martin's sister. She and hubby are not buried in Hamburg, so I believe may be in Evergreen, Yreka.

2. Fanny/Fannie DUZEL/BROWN  is Kate's daughter. b. 29, May 1867, Hamburg, CA, d. 25 Jul 1959, Hamburg Cemetery {headstone info. shared headstone}, m. 3. Sarah Totten, spinster, was sister to Kate Maplesden/Caldwell.  Kate and husband Dan ran the Post Office, he ran the P.O. 12 Feb 1880 and Kate, 31 Jan 1889 at his death.  Sarah A. Bailey then ran the Post Office, who is related to Grace "Tootsie" Martin/Bailey {sisters in laws}.   Dan Caldwell, b. 2 Mar 1838, d. 31 Dec 1898, Hamburg Cemetery {headstone info} Fraternal Mason (unknown where Kate Bailey is buried)

1930 Census, Dan Dietrich, listed as laborer, in actuality was a care taker/handyman, for Kate and her farm, while George Martin was at war and was there until his death...George and Helen Lillian {Longan} returned to Hamburg in 1934, and they took care of both of them, until their deaths. {Lillian is often referred to as "Doodles"}
