Does the Magic Jack Really Work?
Currently millions and millions of individuals have and use Magic Jack and the
reason is simply because the Magic Jack USB
device does indeed work and very well in most cases. If it didn't
work or worked horribly, there would not be millions of subscribers to its
service. This however does not mean that the service is flawless. Is
there any thing that works perfectly first and every time? You decide if
this USB device is for you....I am

Brief Summary
Magic Jack is a USB phone jack, you plug a Wired or Cordless phone into MagicJack, MagicJack is plugged into your PC and you can make phone
calls for Free anywhere in the USA and Canada for free through your
computer. And you can take it with you wherever you go and make
calls from your laptop or another PC with High Speed Internet
connection NOT Dial-up.
The device cost $35-50, and includes first year, each
year after is only $20 a year....so while on the computer, you can
make and receive calls, saving on the Cell phone calls or a Home
phone line, if you still have one. Naturally if you turn off your
computer, this service is not usable. So someone can save $500-1000
or more a year off their home or cell phone bill...so read on and I
put one review of a Guy in CA who calls the Philippines for Free and
how he does it. I shall put up a web page on my site, to explain
the following in the future.
Top
The following is My research, watching
video clips, reading the reviews and currently using my MagicJack.
MagicJack, I watched a couple YouTube videos and this Review at
http://www.infonotmercial.com/magic-jack-review.html and I
am sold, since recently I dropped our home land-line service to save
money...however in order to have DSL/Internet High Speed, I needed a
phone line, so Qwest provided me with a dedicated DSL line to access
the Internet only.
And although MagicJack states the following
Free Local & Long Distance (USA & Canada), directory assistance,
free phone number, call waiting, voice-mail (Voicemail
is stored on the magicJack servers, and is delivered via email), and caller id...to use
it...you must have DSL or Cable access, Not
Dial-up and so you are
paying for Internet Service and the initial fee to buy this USB
adapter MagicJack costs includes first year free and $20 a year
thereafter.
Cons: your call maybe dropped, depending on the noise of the
Internet, speed and RAM of your PC, Internet Connection Speed, the call may not be all that clear, and you have to leave
your computer on 24/7 to receive/make calls.
* Poor customer service, technical support by web only
* May Conflict with other hardware, software
Pros: a whole lot less than a home phone or cell...plus you can
store your call information and numbers and use this USB device on
any computer with Internet Access that is Not
a Dial-up (56K modem). So if you
have a laptop, you can call from any where there is wireless service
or you can plug into the Internet (RJ45).
Another Pro....you do not need a home phone (cordless/wireless) to
make a call, you can use a headset with boom mic.
This company is growing, so who knows where it will go in the future
and the pop-up window for the software may have additional adds in
the future.
I just ordered mine through Amazon.com for $33+shipping. Order
Grand Total: $37.99, which is still less than ordering from
MagicJack.com
I personally see a need, there are calls we can make while on the
computer and receive, turning off our cell phone while online...as I
am on my computer 8-16 hours a day x 7....and when not on my
computer, doing chores outside or gone to the store I have my
Cell....however the MagicJack will receive calls, 4th ring answer
(something you cannot change, how many rings before the software
answers) and MagicJack takes messages and sends them to your
e-mail.
So the MagicJack does not matter if you use MAC or a PC either. And
I am not sure if someone on Skype, were to call your MagicJack
number, the Skype user would be charged or not. Before you buy, if
you have not already, make sure it handles your area code.

MJ (MagicJack)
to MJ calls would be free to another country - read the following
review
Can make overseas calls for free but.....,
August 5, 2009
I was reluctant to purchase Magic Jack at first
thinking this was a scam. After receiving rave reviews from several
of my friends who purchased the product, I figure I had nothing to
lose. I purchased 3… devices, kept
one for myself and sent 2 to my relatives in the Philippines. Yes
folks, from the U.S. to that part of the world. I registered 2 of
the devices with the same area code, 757, and the other in
California, area code 949. I found out MJ to MJ calls are of course
free, but also LANDLINE OR CELL PHONES TO MAGIC JACK WITH THE SAME
AREA CODE ARE ALSO FREE!( USA to Philippines ) The audio quality was
great calling from a internet cable connection to a DSL connection,
that is from the US to the Philippines. No drop calls. In fact, I
was using a 2nd handset cordless phone. Now others may have mixed
reviews but based on my experience, so far, I'm satisfied with it.
And for $35-50 1st year and $20 a year after, WOW, you have to be
saving some bucks and if any thing, a back up to your cell phone and
you can drop the home phone service. What about faxing, you can fax
from a computer too.

A downside of MagicJack is that sometimes when MagicJack performs
an Update/Upgrade
Your
Contacts & Phone Numbers are not saved/stored to your computer, rather on MagicJack's Servers
You do not have the option to back up and restore from
your Computer.
As of 16 Dec
2010, Magic Jack performed an Upgrade to the MJ software & USB Device that I use,
and I quote from their website "magicJack customers have now received our latest
magicJack upgrade. A small number of customers have lost their Contact List. We
are sorry for the inconvenience, please create a new Contact List."
I Contacted MagicJack via TechChat at
http://www.magicjack.com/techchat/
the staff I typed/chatted with "Jaden" & one of MJ's Top 10%
Agents "Andy" the final ruling on the loss of Your/My Contact List aka address book of MJ, is to
back up your Contact List, by manually copying each entry, name and phone number
into Word, Excel, WordPad, etc. Which you might as well have done prior to
installing MJ originally. I have all of my Contacts in Excel. The
downside is the manually typing each and every Contact, any time MJ loses your
Contact List. There is no Export/Import feature or Back up of MJ's Contact
List. Why is this and one answer I received, was this feature was
available, however MJ removed it....when did this happen, why was I not aware of
it before.
The following is my Chat with Tech Support for
Magic Jack, which leaves a lot to be desired, especially having to re-explain
the issue and you are made to feel like you are a dummy...when you know you are
not. I guess Live Chat is the trade off to hearing a Human Voice vs
Automated Support with Mechanical Voice, Push "One" for English.

Jaden: Hello, how may I help you?
Doc:
Hello, I have a complaint
Jaden:
May I know the exact nature of your problem with full details please?
Doc: I cannot find any where on MagicJack.com or MyMagicJack.com a
place I can e-mail Customer Services or Tech
Services. Every time MagicJack performs an upgrade, I lose My Contact List
after an advertisement or banner ad.
Doc:
I then Checked the MJ web site and there is a message "magicJack customers have
now received our latest magicJack upgrade.
A small number of customers have lost their Contact List. We are sorry for the
inconvenience, please create a new Contact List."
Jaden: Is your magicJack device currently plugged in right now
in a USB port of
your computer with the blue light on ?
Doc: However
there are no instructions on how to recover, backup My Contact List/Address-Book,
which then leaves it up to me to re-enter all of my Contact information manually.
As there is no feature to Import/Export Contacts. This is not the first time and it gets very
frustrated, especially when I launched MJ to make a phone call. And if I
had needed to use MJ to make a 911 call, I can not at this point and time.
Doc: Yes, my MJ is plugged in...it booted just fine, until the Ad about
the Magic Talk advertisement popped up
Jaden: May I know if you're using the USB extension cord provided when plugging
the magicJack device on the port of your
computer?
Doc: No I am NOT using a USB Extension or USB hub. MY MJ
device us plugged directly into a USB port on my computer.
Doc: Again, this is not the first time this has happened, it happens
every time MJ performs an update...and I do not have any
other options but to allow the update/upgrade and then My Contact List is gone.
Doc: I
have over 25 years experience with computers. The problem is not with my MJ USB Device, it is with MJ and their
updates
Jaden: Try plugging your magicJack device right now on the different USB port of
your computer using the USB extension cord
provided.
Doc: As I said the USB device is recognized in
the Device Manager as working properly, however
the MJ Device does not show as a under My Computer as an External Device. I
am running Windows 7, and have been using this MJ device since Sep 2009
Jaden: Is your magicJack device currently plugged in right now on the port of
your computer tower with the blue light on?
Doc: Yes,
and the problem is when MJ was booting, MJ has/had an update it performed and
then I lost My Contact List and even on
your own site states "magicJack customers have now received our latest magicJack
upgrade. A small number of customers have lost
their Contact List. We are sorry for the inconvenience, please create a new
Contact List."
Doc: There needs to be something done as to prevent this every time MJ
decides to perform an update, so we the
consumer do not lose our Address-Book/Contact List.
Jaden: Thank you for the details you have provided Doc. I appreciate your
further explanation about this matter.
Doc: And why can't I
Contact MJ by e-mail and explain to Customer or Tech Services this issue?
Jaden: Let me know once you are ready to fix this issue
Doc: Where are there instructions on how to back up your
Address-Book,
where it is located?
Doc: I have removed and re-installed the MJ USB device
Jaden: Please do not be worry regarding Address book we are updating all
magicJack users software for them to automatically
backed up the address in your Contact List
Doc: I do worry as now I have to re-enter all of my
Contacts and I
already know MJ is updating or I should say has updated my MJ software and this is what cause my
problem in the first place
Doc: I want control of my
Address-Book, so I can back it up.
Jaden: You can have it back up manually.
Jaden: Please copy all those
Contact List to your computer WordPad or MS Word.
Doc: And how do I back up my
Address-Book manually is what I am asking
then, as I already stated there are no instructions
on MJ web site on how to back up your Address-Book and where that file is stored
to backup manually?
Doc: How do I copy the
Contact List, when it states "customers have
lost their Contact List"????
Jaden: I can assist you regarding this matter
Jaden: Let me know once you ready
Jaden: We will just run the upgrade
Jaden: I understand that you have explained a lot regarding this issue.
Jaden: I am more than willing to assist you on this
Doc: How am I to open the
Address-Book/Contact List from the Menu
screen???
Jaden: One moment please...
Doc: What Upgrade, it all ready installed when I booted MJ and why I
lost the Contact List and I went to MJ.com and read
the message that I have now quoted twice in this conversation?
Jaden: One moment please...
Jaden: I am transferring you to one of our top 10% agents as rated by our
customers. Please hold while I transfer you.
Doc: O Boy top 10%
Please wait while I transfer the chat to the best suited site operator.
You are now chatting with 'Andy'
Your Issue ID for this chat is LTK43606323290X
Andy: Hi there this Andy
Doc: Let me guess, I have to start all over explaining
Andy: How are you today?
Andy: I believe you wish to login at your account right>?
Doc: No, I
am Very Frustrated with MJ, their updates, thus causing the loss of
My Contact List, every time MJ decides to update. And
without prior notice, or are there instructions on how to back up the Contact
List/Address-Book
before the update occurs, so you can re-install the Contact List, instead of having to Re-Enter it
manually all over again. As some numbers I have since
added from calls received/made, that I have not had the chance to write down any where
else. And had/if My Contact List could be backed up, exported/imported,
there would be no problem if the Contact List was lost due to MJ upgrading.
Andy: I'm afraid its not possible to back up Contact List this time as the
feature was already removed.
Doc: MJ performed an Update when I launched MJ
USB Device, then there was this Ad for Magic Talk, which until you select Cancel, you cannot use MJ...then once I clicked
Cancel, I received the message My Contact List did not
load/lost etc. So I then went to MJ.com & MYMagicJack.com to see if there
were instructions on how to back up or reload My Contact
List or to write MJ Customer or a Tech Services, and there was no information on
either.
Doc: Oh great, so there was a Feature to back up My
Contacts, now
removed....so I cannot backup my Contacts.
Andy: We already removed that feature, Doc and you need to copy your Contact
one at a time if you wish to have a back up Contact
List.
Doc:
So there is no way I can manually locate the Contact List to back up as in copy
and paste?
Andy: There no way to locate it, Doc.
Doc: Copy one at a time, means to re-enter manually one at a time,
and in the future when MJ performs any update that affects MY Contact
List, which if I have 100 names and phone numbers, I get to re-enter one at a time.
Andy: Yes as i've stated, its one at a time.
Doc: I have Excel with Names, Phone Numbers, Addresses, and other
information, however there is no way to import these
Names & Numbers into any file of MJ, so one does not have to manually enter each
one.
Andy: It will not work with MS Excel as well, Doc.
Doc: Thank you for your time, my time has been wasted...and as a
Webmaster, I shall post this conversation for all other MJ
users and potential Users of MJ. How idiotic in the world of technology, one
cannot have a file containing your Contacts to back up or
the option to back up or to be notified by MJ that an update is pending and
manually copy all of your Contact information, so you can
manually input it back after the update, as you are going to lose all Contact
Information.
Andy: I understand your part, but we only following standard procedures here in
our end and this can't be changed.
Doc: I am not saying it can work with Excel, if there is no feature to
Back Up in the first place. I was just stating I have and
use Excel for my names, addresses, etc. The point is MJ has no way of backing up
the Contact List by copy & pasting that file that
stores this information from the MJ USB Device or on your site.
Doc:
And which brings me back to my question/statement of there not being any way to
Contact MJ via E-Mail or through MY
Magic Jack.com & My Account to complain, suggest, recommend. MJ has lost me as a
customer for sure now. When my 5 yr's are up, I
will no longer use MJ, just because this feature to back up is manually, and if
there was ever an automatic feature, it has since been
removed by MJ.
Andy: Yes I understand, But as I've said this is our standard operating
procedures and we cannot do anything to change this.
Doc:
Good Day
I see MJ's way of helping is avoiding the issue
or not by answering my questions fully. As with any device, it is subject
not to work as designed.
